Why So Happy Meal
Why So Happy Meal
Each year we choose a moment in history (Usually infamous in some way) and take on the challenge of creating an art piece around it. With that said you are looking at the newest installment of history meets art and chances are you don't know this story, but it is true none the less. So, come back to 1991 with us...the home of the ROCK AND ROLL McDonalds in downtown Chicago. It was independently owned by a drug cartel (Unannounced to McDonalds, of course). If you were to drive through this eatery outside and say the following words “I would like a happy meal, PLEASE hold the toy”, you would drive to the delivery window and inside THAT happy meal would be a $3000 bag of cocaine. Then the fateful day of 1994 when a police detective drove through this McDonalds with his daughter in the backseat. The toys offered at the time scared her, so he said the magic words “Give me a happy meal, PLEASE hold the toy. You guessed it, he got the bag of cocaine. Which he paid for, drove around the corner, called SWAT, and raided that McDonalds an hour later. Fun, Fun, Fun. To this day that McDonalds still stands, but it can NOT be independently owned ever again. There is a deeper meaning to this piece. As we all know eating McDonalds is not exactly the sanest of behaviors and it could be said, if you did day after day, the joke would be on you.
